Scripture: Judges 3:1-11
“They took their daughters in marriage and gave
their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.”
Judges 3:6 (NIV)
A man of God once said that any Christian who marries an unbeliever has made the devil his/her father in-law thereby bringing him/her under the perpetual influence of darkness. God commanded in Exodus 34:16 that His people should not go into marriage relationship with the gentile nations.
While counselling young people, I have come across quite a number of them intending to marry unbelievers. They usually employ various schemes to get me to agree with why they can marry the person; most of them claim that they will convert him/her just before or after the wedding ceremony. Beloved, this is not just unbiblical, but also very foolish to think you can disobey God and enjoy it. You may want to know the implications! Israel, as a consequence of marital covenant, went after the god of their in-laws and this was what the LORD was avoiding.
Marriage is a very strong covenant. The influence of a couple on one another is tremendous. They will be sympathetic to themselves particularly in difficulty. When an idol worshipping wife requests her husband’s support to consult idols at the point of death of a dying child, just imagine how difficult it would be to turn down the request. On the other hand, an idolatrous husband might demand for his wife to bow to his idols. Think about it. Let us pay the price of obeying him today so that we can enjoy the prize of obedience tomorrow.
