THE STING OF OFFENCE

Scripture: Matt 5:21-26

“Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences
will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come.”
Luke 17:1 (KJV)

Often, Christians who feel offended by something in church, stop attending church. This is a ploy of the enemy to hinder God’s will in their lives. Offense comes from Satan because we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and spiritual wickedness in high places so we must be alert (Ephesians 6:12, James 4:7).

Jesus outlined a procedure to follow if a brother commit a sin or offense against another brother. If you are aware of any wrong you have done to anyone, you have a responsibility to go to him or her and seek for forgiveness. If not your relationship with God in worship, prayers and service may not be acceptable. The word says, if you bring your gift to the altar, and while there, you remember your brother has something against you, leave your gift at the altar and reconcile first with your brother (Matthew 5: 23- 24). Offence breeds bitterness, destroys relationships and hinders our worship.

You might not feel that you have legitimately offended someone. However, if you are aware that they harbour an offence against you, you are obligated to resolve the issue. Be willing to be humble and submissive for the sake of peace, even when you do not consider yourself to be at fault. The state of your relationship with others, to a great extent, tells the state of your relationship with God. You cannot love God and remain at war with his creation (Romans 15:1-3). A sincere apology may be all it takes.

PRAYER: Lord, I resist the temptation to be held bound by the spirit of offense in Jesus name.

FAITH BYTE: I refuse to yield to offense. I guard my heart and treasure my relationships.
