THE OLD MAN

Scripture: Ephesians 4:17-32

“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you?
Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?”
James 4:1 (NIV)

Our old nature can become a source of conflict even when we have accepted Jesus as Lord if we allow ourselves to do what we want rather than what God wants. The old nature, which is the flesh, will continue to fight the new nature of God that we have received by reason of the death of Jesus.

The old man or nature is self-seeking and lives to gratify its own desires but the new man seeks to glorify God.
Being born again does not automatically wipe out your old habits, behaviours or character; it has only removed the dominion of sin over you. The old man will still seek to act contrary to the will of God even though you are spiritually a new man in Christ. The old nature like anger and bitterness might seek to exhibit itself but you must quell them and put them aside.

As a child of God, when desires that causes the old man to dominate is prevalent, you must stand on the word of God. The action of taking off the old man is a conscious and consistent process you must undertake with the help of the Holy Spirit by renewing your mind (Romans 12:12). You must flee from people, relationships or situations that expose you to compromise your faith. The word of God is also a sure weapon to engage constantly if  you must overcome the old man. You cannot lose this war. You must dominate the old man.
