GREED

Scripture: II Kings 5:20-27

‘‘Don not love money; be satisfied with what you have.
For God has said, ‘I will never abandon you.’’’ Hebrews 13:5(NLT)

Greed is an unquenchable desire or lust for pleasures, wealth or fame. Such desires are often born out of selfishness, and the want to impress, show off, or lord over others. Greed, if not checked, destroys, as is the case with Gehazi in our key scripture. Greed is a sin that can bring trouble not just to the one who practices it, but his/her entire household (Proverbs 15:27).

Fear of present or future lack, scarcity, faithlessness, doubt and sheer insatiable hunger for life’s pleasures are some of the causes of greed. Greed manifests in different forms; rivalry, bribery,
cheating, materialism, etc. Greed is also common in the church. It is no longer uncommon for some so-called men of God to monetize prayers and miracles. Some even go as far as coercing unsuspecting Christians to pay for God’s blessings! We must beware of, and guard against such. You must also avoid using the gifts of God; especially those meant to edify the church for personal gains, as doing such can expose you to the wrath and punishment of God.

Should you have needs, ask God and shall receive (Matthew 7:7).  Don’t worry about what to eat or drink tomorrow, because God knows your needs and will surely not leave you in need (Luke 12:22 - 28). If you are guilty of greed, quickly and genuinely repent, then plead for God’s mercy and forgiveness, just like Zacchaeus did (Luke 19:2 - 9). Be contented with what you have knowing that God will never forsake you and his plan is to enlarge you.

REMEMBER TO ATTEND: Leadership/Communion Service tomorrow, 5:30PM.

PRAYER: Father, teach me to be content with what I have, in Jesus name.

FAITH BYTE:  I am not greedy; God’s blessings are enough for me.
