THE SEED OF PRIDE
Scripture: Esther 1:10-17
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (NIV)
The name Vashti means goodness and beauty. A combination of these two qualities would suggest a concerned, thoughtful and humble nature. But Vashti is famously remembered for her pride
and how this caused the loss of her place as queen and her position in the Persian kingdom.
Pride relies on self-sufficiency rather than God’s sufficiency. It is an over-bloated assessment of self that blinds us from seeing the good in anyone but ourselves. We fail to see the beauty God has placed around us. Queen Vashti’s proud nature did not allow her name to define her character, rather it extinguished her. A proud heart operates in stubbornness and inflexibility. It does not recognize the folly of its actions. We must resist every urge to be proud in our day to day lives. The devil knows he can steal your joy, prosperity and blessings by sowing the seed of pride in you.
To overcome the spirit of pride, you must truly become humble. Humility accepts that we can fail and learn from it because we do not know it all. Humility requires that we rely on God’s sufficient wisdom and grace in everything we say and do. Remember, God’s blessings upon your life is for the purpose of glorifying him not to grow you into a conceited person.
PRAYER: Lord, I choose to be humble rather than being proud in Jesus name.
FAITH BYTE: Humility defines every area of my life and relationships
