SERVING GOD

Scripture: Joshua 24:24; Deuteronomy 11:13-14

“If anyone serves me, he must follow Me, and where I am there will my Servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.’’ John 12:26 (NKJV)

There are ways some believers submit to God that make him appear like a threatening deity. There are also ways some believers serve or obey divine instructions that gives God away as a frightening dictator or authority rather than a loving father.
God does not require a service motivated by morbid fear but one fueled by love, reverence and sincere obedience. Service to God should not be transactional - engineered by what we will get or fear over what we will lose. Rather, we should imbibe a lifestyle of righteous accountability to him on a daily basis (Deut. 11:13). This means that we must check the sum of our actions by the standard of his word daily. This lifestyle requires obedience, and our obedience will only thrive if we truly love God.

Serving God is serious business. It is not a matter to be handled lightly. It requires a deliberate, committed and prayerfully guided effort on our part. Serving him is an investment that will bless us and generations to come (Deut. 7:9). Make a commitment today, to serve God with all your whole heart and mind (Matt. 22:37). Serve him with gladness of heart and glorify him (1 Pet. 4:11). When you do so, his honour rests on you (Jn. 12:26) and his beauty decorates your life (1 Cor. 2:9).

Reflection: What am I doing that solely in service to God?
