USE YOUR TONGUE WISELY

Scripture: Proverbs 15:1-4

“Don’t use fowl or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29 (NLT)

The tongue is a mighty weapon that has the power to build or destroy depending on how it is used. It can make the difference in a conflict or dispute. There are also times when silence may be as required as words once spoken to another cannot be withdrawn and like broken glass may be nearly impossible to put back together. This means that your words can create problems.

As a Christian, your tongue should build and heal. It should produce beautiful words of life and hope. You should not be branded as a person with loose and unbraided tongue that blurts out whatever comes to mind, not caring if it hurts the next person or not. Jesus in his teachings and interaction with the Pharisees sets a perfect example for us to emulate. He was always wise in his response to questions thrown at him by the Pharisees. His words were precise, kind and edifying; never angry or destructive.

Is your speech consistent with that of Jesus? Do you use offensive, abusive and destructive words out of anger? As a Christian, do you lie, gossip, backbite or bear tales about others? Order your words and your tongue will have the capacity to produce words that edify, encourage and minister life to the hearer.
