THE LAW OF LIBERTY

Scripture: James 2:1-13

“So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged
by the law of liberty.” James 2:12(KJV))

There may be some confusion about the term ‘ law of liberty'. How does one put the words law and liberty in one phrase. The law sets rules and punishments, while liberty connotes freedom. However in Christ all things are possible. The Lion and the Lamb has brought the law and liberty together.
The law of liberty simply means a law that sets you free from all other laws. This law is called the law of love and it states “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” ( Gal. 5:14). All the law is fulfilled in this single law. Indeed, we prove our love for God, when we love our neighbour who we can see.1John 4:20. James explains that when we fail to treat others fairly and mercifully, we are breaking the law of liberty and become subject to the strict old testament laws, that punishes offenders without mercy. However, when we love others and treat them as we would treat ourselves, God judges us under the law of liberty and uses mercy to override any judgement against us due to sin (vs 13.)

Be merciful and fair to others, so that God can be merciful to you. Don’t act as if you can never sin and be unmerciful, when it is within your power to be merciful. It is so much better to operate under the law of liberty, than to be under the law of sin and death.

PRAYER: Father, help me to walk in love towards my neighbour, in Jesus Name.

FAITH BYTE: I operate under the law of liberty and I am merciful to others.
